Catalytic Converter Replacement: Essential for Your Car's Health

Your catalytic converter plays a crucial role in reducing harmful emissions and maintaining your vehicle's performance. Here's why you might need a replacement:

  • Check engine light is on
  • Decreased fuel efficiency
  • Unusual exhaust odors
  • Failed emissions test
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Rattling noises from underneath the car

Don't ignore these signs! A faulty catalytic converter can lead to more serious engine problems and costly repairs down the road. Let our experienced team at Advance Muffler Technology diagnose and replace your catalytic converter, ensuring your vehicle runs cleanly and efficiently.

Catalytic Converters in Layman’s Terms

Converters 101, as understood by Kelly — who is not a scientist or a mechanic, just someone who’s been in the business for ages and has common sense.

"Catalytic converters remove some of the harmful emissions from your vehicle. Inside the metal casing is a ceramic brick. This brick is soaked in a chemical concoction that heats up when exhaust flows over it. The heat then burns off pollutants in the emissions, effectively “cleaning” your exhaust. The chemical concoction on the ceramic brick is coated with platinum, palladium, and rhodium. What are these? They are all precious metals—and they aren’t cheap.

Keep that in mind when I quote you, as I’m sure you can find a “cheaper” one online. That $200 converter you found online won’t even be in the same league as the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part and most likely won’t keep your check engine light off for long.

In theory, a converter is made to last the life of the vehicle. However, as we all know, as things age, they just don’t work as well or run as smoothly—and engines are no exception. The components in our fuel, overdue tune-ups, broken fuel injectors, and normal wear and tear from a piston moving the same route over and over all cause wear. Eventually, these issues make their way into the exhaust system and through the converter.

The converter wasn’t designed to process these contaminants and will eventually clog or even melt. The added heat required to burn off excess contaminants can wear away the chemical coating and even melt the ceramic. Both situations result in the need for a new converter."

Do I really need a new one?

"Yep, you do. If you have a converter code, then you need a new one. The converter is monitored by your car’s electronic system—before and after the exhaust goes through it. This means the system knows whether the converter is working; if it’s not, it throws an engine code.

If you need a converter and don’t replace it, the computer will adjust your air/fuel ratio, which will result in a loss of fuel mileage. If you continue to ignore it, you’ll then notice a lack of power. That’s because your converter is slowly clogging. Keep driving it, and it will eventually melt or clog completely.

In addition to all of that, keep in mind that your emissions/exhaust have to go somewhere. If they’re not going through the converter and out the tailpipe, there’s a good chance it could eventually damage your engine. And if you think a converter is expensive, ask me how much an engine swap costs."

Are all converters made equal?
"No. Absolutely not. The chemical concoction on the ceramic brick is coated in platinum, palladium, and rhodium. What are these? They’re all precious metals—and they aren’t cheap.

So a $150 converter you find online won’t even be in the same league as an aftermarket one I could supply, much less the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part. Think about it: if converters contain expensive precious metals, do you really think a cheap knockoff from China has enough to meet your vehicle’s emission requirements? Probably not."
